Multi-generational families inform design of entertaining Carleton

It can be difficult for multi-generational households assessing home options to find a natural fit.

For living arrangements that include extended family, conventional three bedroom and 2.5 bathroom orientations, for instance, would be lacking.

With the Carleton, Morrison Homes gives these families a functional solution. This is a 2,089-square-foot  single-family model displayed as a show home in the northeast Calgary community of Cornerstone.

In the show home, an optional second level format is exercised, giving it four bedrooms rather than three. The fourth bedroom is substantial and includes a walk-in closet. The show home depicts an exclusive design studio option that creates a shared ensuite between the third and fourth bedroom.

The master bedroom is 13 feet by 13 feet and stars a luxurious ensuite. The ensuite features a generously proportioned glass-encased shower with full-height tile, and a soaker tub beneath a window.

It also provides direct access to the master’s walk-in closet, creating a single, all-purpose space in which to get ready for one’s day.

Each of the above mentioned bedrooms has a smaller bedroom kitty corner, and next to it, respectively.

A central bonus room divides the second floor into separate wings. There is an option that moves the bonus room to the front of the second floor, and tacks on a 12-foot eight-inch by seven-foot 10-inch tech centre.

In most homes, the bedrooms are on the second floor and sometimes a developed basement. In both cases, this involves regular use of stairs.

For some seniors, this may not be a viable option. As seen in the show home, the builder addresses this challenge with a main floor bedroom. This is achieved through the enclosed flex room floor plan option.

The main floor bedroom is positioned across from the centrally located L-shaped kitchen. Supporting the needs of the people occupying this bedroom is a full bathroom on the main level. Typically the main floor has a half bathroom.

This show home also has a bedroom in the legal suite demonstrated in its basement. This level also contains a kitchen, rec area, full bathroom and laundry room. Beyond allocating this space for family, it may be used by a rental tenant to offset mortgage payments.

Supporting this idea, the show home presents a side entrance. This offers a tenant direct access to their living space, avoiding the need for them to cross the main level.

The aforementioned kitchen boasts an island with a sink and an eating bar that seats at least four people. Its appliances are nicely paced with the fridge on one wall and oven on another. Above the oven is a chimney-style hoodfan.

This is one of two cooking spaces in the home. The second is often called a spice kitchen and accessed from within the main kitchen. Its purpose is to restrict scents from preparing certain dishes to this space, rather than other ends of the open-concept floor plan.

The spice kitchen includes an oven, cabinets, sink and white wire shelves.

A dining area and great room line up along the rear wall of the main floor, which has several tall windows and sliding glass doors. This pulls in plenty of natural light into both spaces.

The great room also attracts attention with its stylish elongated fireplace.
