They signed their first professional contracts only a couple of weeks ago, and now two of the top prospects in the Calgary Flames’ system have scored major invites from Hockey Canada.

On Tuesday morning, Zayne Parekh and Etienne Morin were named to the national junior team’s Summer Showcase roster.

That puts them on the short-list of 42 players who could be in contention to represent Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championship later this year.

For Parekh, it’s the latest honour in a whirlwind month that saw him selected No. 9 overall by the Flames in the NHL Draft last month. He then signed an entry-level contract only a week and a half later.

The 18-year-old defenceman is coming off a big year for the Saginaw Spirit that saw him lead OHL blueliners in points after he scored 33 goals and added 63 assists and helped his team claim the Memorial Cup on home ice.

Parekh was named the league’s Most Outstanding Defenceman for his efforts.

It’s been no less of an exciting summer for Morin, who signed his entry-level contract on the same day as Parekh during the Flames’ summer development camp.

The Flames selected Morin in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft. He returned to the QMJHL for a third season with the Moncton Wildcats last year, when he scored 12 goals and added 37 assists. He also made his pro debut after the Wildcats were eliminated from the playoffs, suiting up for the Calgary Wranglers in his first taste of AHL action.

The Summer Showcase goes down from July 28 to Aug. 3 in Windsor, Ont. There will be two days of workouts in Windsor, followed by a game against Finland on Aug. 2 and another against the United States on Aug. 3 in Plymouth, Mich.
