Calgary Stampeders extend Cameron Judge for another season

Cameron Judge is the type of player any CFL team would want to keep around.

So it’s no small thing that the Calgary Stampeders got their star linebacker to add an extra year to his contract on Monday morning, with Judge signing a contract extension that will keep him in Red & White until the end of the 2025 season.

Since being acquired in early 2022 in a trade that sent Royce Metchie to the Toronto Argonauts, Judge has been one of the league’s elite defensive players for the Stampeders.

Playing at weakside linebacker, Judge has been the team’s Most Outstanding Canadian nominee in each of his first two seasons in Calgary. He was a CFL all-star in 2022 and this particular writer found it utterly baffling that he wasn’t selected for the same honour last season.

Because even on a Stampeders team that struggled for most of 2023, Judge was exceptional.

In 17 starts, he picked up a career-high 90 tackles and led the Stamps with five interceptions — again, as a linebacker, not a defensive back.

He also came up with arguably the two biggest plays of the Stampeders season. With the team’s backs against the wall and its playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Judge secured a vital pick-six against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Week 19. It turned the game on its head and the Stamps earned a huge win in a do-or-die game.

In the game that helped the Stampeders clinch a playoff spot against the B.C. Lions, Judge was even better. He had six tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception in that game, helping the Stamps clinch a playoff spot.

So yes, the 29-year-old’s impact went well beyond his stats, although those were wildly impressive, too. The fact that he qualifies as a Canadian only adds to his value for a Stampeders team that is looking to bounce back from a disappointing run of seasons and hopefully win its first playoff game since 2018 next year.
